Build a tiny house yourself – no problem if you have manual skills

Are you interested in a tiny house but want to spend as little money as possible? You can save a lot of money by doing it yourself. However, you must be handy and have specialist knowledge. Or you have someone on hand who will help you with his know-how.

Also consider the time resources if you want to build a tiny house yourself. It will take some time before the tiny house is ready to move in.

Of course there are some cost factors that you have to take into account and which you probably cannot avoid. The main costs include:

  • Costs for property (if you don't have your own garden): Depending on the federal state, the prices can vary greatly. The price range is very wide, ranging from around €45/sqm in Saxony-Anhalt to over €1,000 per square meter in Hamburg. You should therefore obtain specific information from the municipality in order to find out the price of your property.
  • Material costs for the Tiny House: shell kit with chassis, papers, stand construction, insulation, Cladding materials made of spruce possible from 16,000 euros
  • Connection costs if the building is not completely self-sufficient: around 12,000 euros
  • Interior decoration costs such as Kitchen, sleeping and living area: Depending on the furnishings, they are completely individual
  • Building permit costs: Plan around 0.5 percent of the likely costs for the building application
  • Small House Movement - Notes

Small House Movement - this is where people meet who find that even the smallest hut has space...

Some work should preferably be done by qualified personnel. This includes work on the electrics, plumbing and heating. After all, everything has to be connected securely and reliably so that nothing happens.

Of course, you can do the interior decoration and painting yourself without any problems. This saves you some costs and gives you a free hand in terms of design.

There are already particularly cheap, turnkey mini-houses. Particularly cheap small houses are around 10,000 euros. But if you want small houses with more luxury, there are of course no upper limits. Costs of 100,000 euros and more can quickly arise.

Can individual requests be included when purchasing?

If you decide to buy a ready-made tiny house, you should note that most manufacturers of tiny houses offer a modular principle. So you get a turnkey tiny house for a package price. Minor adjustments are often possible at no extra charge.

However, the tiny house can also be customized. In this case you have to reckon with a surcharge. In return you get a small house that has been tailored to your wishes and requirements.

Obtain a building permit for the Tiny House in advance

Most people think that they can easily place a small mini house on their own lot. However, there are also building regulations for a tiny house. So you can't just order a kit, set it up or have it built and move in.

However, each state has its own regulations. Therefore, you must inform yourself in advance about the requirements of the authority. If, for example, it is simply used as a garden shed, no permit is required. However, if it is to be used for permanent residential purposes, a building permit is usually relevant.

By the way, there are other requirements for long-term campers. If you want to park the Tiny House on a permanent pitch on a campsite, no building permit is required. Normally, this also applies if you use the Tiny House all year round.

Get information first, then build Tiny House

Even if it is too tempting to just put a tiny house in the garden and use it for residential purposes, do some research beforehand. As soon as you have the OK from the authorities, you can set up the tiny house or have it set up by the experts.

In general, there is a lot of savings potential if you set up the tiny house yourself or at least partially set it up yourself. With skill and expertise, the small house is quickly available.
