Iambus: Sentences for practice
The iambus is one of the verse feet often used in poems and poetry. The sentences then always begin without stress and in the further course every second syllable of the sentences is stressed. The iambus and trochee are opposing players, recognizing the respective foot of the verse is not very difficult.
General information about the iambus
The iambus is a so-called verse foot, which says something about the stress of the individual syllables within a meter. An unstressed syllable is always followed by a stressed syllable, always starting with a non-stressed syllable.
- The counterpart to the iambus is the trochaeus, which always begins with an accent, followed by unstressed and accented syllables alternately. The word iambus is actually a trochee, as it is stressed on the first syllable.
- In the metric, instead of the terms "stressed" and "unstressed", there is talk of an increase and a decrease. The iambus is an elevation.
- The iambus plays an important role in the accented metric when it comes to using ancient verses correct accentuation or the meter used with the addition of the metric explain.
Exercise sentences for clarification
- One of the example sentences to illustrate the iambus is: "I like to go jogging today." Here the stress is on every second syllable, starting without stress. A contrary trochee belongs to the following sentence: "Today the weather is fine". Here, too, every second syllable is stressed again, but an emphasis is started here.
- Further exercise sentences could be: "The iambus is found very often." or "I liked the food". Here, too, every second syllable is emphasized, starting with an unstressed syllable.

Recognize the meter of sentences
It is often important to recognize the meter used. This is actually not that difficult at all. You can say the sentences out loud and clap your hands whenever a syllable is stressed. Pay attention to the flow within the sentences, because the meter will never disturb it, the sentence melody must always sound correct and melodic. In this way you can quickly find out whether it is an iambus or another foot of verse.
