- The lens in the human eye steadily loses elasticity due to deposits, which can ultimately lead to so-called presbyopia and general vision problems. This is not a disease, but a completely normal symptom of old age that sooner or later affects almost everyone.
- Since the lens can no longer adapt quickly and strongly enough, various visual aids may be necessary. Reading glasses for close-up vision and glasses that facilitate vision at medium and long distances are often part of everyday life. The constant change between the different visual aids is not only impractical in the long run, but also often not completely sufficient for good vision at all distances enable.
- So-called bifocal or varifocal glasses offer different levels of vision in one lens, which means that there is no need to switch between different glasses. But what are varifocals and how do they differ from other visual aids?
What is the difference between varifocals and bifocal lenses?
To have the necessary, different visual aids in one glasses to unite, two basic ways have been developed. The bifocal or trifocal glasses and the varifocals. But what are varifocals and how do they differ from bifocal lenses?
- Bifocal glasses are visual aids that offer both a long-range lens area and an area for near vision. Both strengths are clearly delineated and clearly recognizable. Optionally, the bifocal lenses are separated into an upper and a lower part or the area for near vision is melted down to the far strength. If there are large differences between the two strengths, a third area can also be added to transform the visual aid into so-called trifocal glasses. The inventor of bifocal lenses is none other than Benjamin Franklin, who was tired of constantly switching between different glasses.
- Varifocal glasses also offer different strengths in one lens. As the name suggests, however, these parts are not clearly separated from each other, but merge smoothly, fluidly and seamlessly into one another. The distance strength is at the top and gradually changes into the strength for near vision in the lower area of the lens.
