Build a key box out of wood
In order not to have to keep looking for the front door key, the car key or the garage key in their home, many people buy a key box. If you also need a key box, then simply build one out of wood.
What you need:
- 1 x tube of wood glue
- 20 small hooks
- 2 small screw hinges
- 1 small doorknob
- 2 small door magnets
- 1 pencil
They prepare the key box
Remove a key box wood for 20 keys.
- The first thing you need for your wooden key box is the key rack. Cut this board from 2 cm thick beech wood to the dimensions 60 cm x 40 cm. The keys will later be hung on this board.
- Now cut the side parts out of 1 cm thick beech wood. Two side parts are cut to a size of 50 cm x 4 cm and two further side parts are cut to a size of 40 cm x 4 cm. These side parts will later be glued to a rectangle on the key plate of your wooden key box.
- The 1 cm thick beech wood panel for the door is cut to a size of 48 cm x 38 cm. This door will later be provided with a door knob and attached to two hinges and will have small magnets for opening and closing.
- Then cut another small one roof, as an ornament, so to speak. It will later form a slope, from the 60 cm of the key plate to the 50 cm of the actual key box. This roof is cut from 1 cm thick beech wood to a size of 15 cm x 40 cm.

The wooden box for keys is completed
- Take the key board of your wooden key box and draw two thin lines with a pencil. Draw the first line at a height of 15 cm and draw the second line at a height of 30 cm, measured from the lower edge. Now distribute the 20 small hooks on these two lines.
- Simply screw the hooks into the key plate, just try to get reasonably equal distances so that you can then easily hang up the individual keys.
- Now take the side parts of your wooden key box, apply wood glue and glue the parts to a 50 cm x 40 cm rectangle on your key plate. The bracket and the small magnet that serves as a door lock is attached in the middle of the right side part.
- The two screw hinges are now screwed in on the inside of the left side part. Then attach the front panel to the hinges. This plate also gets a small handle button and the counterpart to the small magnet is attached on the inside.
- Finally, only the small roof is glued on for decoration and your self-made wooden key box is ready.
You can also paint the key box with clear varnish, which gives the box a visual upgrade.
