Substructure for a water bed

A water bed is heavy and it immediately makes sense that the base, i.e. the substructure of the water bed, should be stable. Most people only think about the load-bearing capacity of the substructure and forget the actual purpose.

Principle of the substructure of the water bed

The most important task of the substructure is not to keep the waterbed mattress at a comfortable height, but to distribute the weight of the mattress evenly on the floor. That is why the substructure is always built according to the following principle:

  • The exterior of the substructure also serves the purpose of making the waterbed appear harmonious. This can also be interrupted, for example, to accommodate drawers under the bed.
  • In the interior of this frame constructions must be built, which in the form of columns have a base area of Have squares, hexagons or rectangles, and the weight of the mattress is evenly distributed on the floor to distribute. A large water bed can weigh over 200 kg. If this weight were distributed over four points, this could reduce the stability of the ceiling endanger. Evenly distributed over the entire bed area, this is not a problem.
  • This substructure is covered with so-called base plates, on which the actual water bed is then expanded, i.e. the side parts and the mattress.

Construction of the load distributor

It doesn't matter what shape you take for the substructure, it is just important that all of the boards you use Construct load-sharing elements that are the same width and that they are symmetrical under the bed are distributed.

Instructions for a bed with a width of 1.40 m

Some living rooms are not suitable for setting up a prefabricated bed from the ...

  • The height of the substructure is up to you. If you want to use an existing bed frame, you have to adjust to its height. Heights of 20 to 30 cm are common.
  • A simple substructure for load distribution is created if you - for a water bed measuring 1.80 to 2.00 m by 2.00 to 2.20 m - Connect a board of length 2.20 in the desired plinth height in the middle with 2 boards of dimensions 1.10 m at right angles. You now have a cross that is placed under the diagonals of the water bed. Then place 2 boards of 0.55 m at a distance of 55 cm on the legs of the cross in each segment. You then have four square columns in the middle with a base of 55 x 55 cm. This construction is simple and functional, but has the disadvantage that you cannot build in a shoe store,
  • You surround the whole thing with a frame that must have the same height as the load distribution in the substructure. For the frame, choose either a beautiful solid wood, which you can stain for the rest of the furnishings, or coated chipboard. You can screw the corners together, or - which is more elegant - connect them with special corner profiles. On this construction you can then distribute 4 chipboards as a base plate.
  • But you can also build a large H out of chipboard, to which you attach further boards at the level of the middle line of the "H". The frame then consists of a head and foot section and has 2 strips on the sides, which are inserted into recesses in the head and foot sections and the attached boards. Then you can use the space under the water bed. If you want to use drawers of different dimensions, it makes sense to insert two middle lines in the "H" and also add two boards. In these constructions, 2 floor panels with a width of 0.88 m are used for beds with a width of 1.80 m. 0.98 m if the bed is 2 m wide. The length is 4 cm shorter than the bed length.

The substructure of a waterbed is easy to create even for inexperienced do-it-yourselfers.
