VIDEO: Sky receiver hangs up

You can watch the pay TV Sky by cable or satellite receive. You need a receiver into which you can insert the smart card. This is already integrated in newer televisions, as an alternative you can set up an external device.

When the Sky receiver hangs

A Sky receiver has one software uploaded, with which you can receive and sort the channels from Sky and all free programs. It also contains an electronic program guide and, on many devices, you have the option of using a USBhard disk and record the broadcasts. If the Sky Receiver hangs, in most cases this is due to the software. Try restarting the device.

• Switch off the device and disconnect it from the power supply for a few minutes. Then turn it back on and check that the software is working properly.
• You can also try software-based recovery. This menu option can be found in the settings. With this option, the Sky receiver is reset to the factory settings, your channel lists and other settings are lost.

Sometimes it is also helpful to do a firmware update. Check whether the firmware version is up to date.

Give the receiver a firmware update

• You can give your receiver a firmware update via satellite. If it hangs frequently or if you have other problems with receiving Sky, you should update the software.
• Open the menu and go to "Settings" or "Services". The designation can vary from one manufacturer to another.
• You will find the "Firmware update" submenu and when you open it you will be shown whether a new update is available. If so, you can install it. During this time you cannot use the receiver for television reception.

Make sure that you do not disconnect the device from the mains during the update. Do not turn it off even during the reboot. After a firmware update, the receiver should no longer hang. If so, there may be a hardware problem. You should then present the device to a service workshop.
