Build a ramp over steps for a wheelchair
In our society everything has to happen quickly and, best of all, run like clockwork. People are reluctant to wait for something and everyone is used to moving around without problems. For a wheelchair user, however, a few steps are a real obstacle. It is important to remedy this with a special ramp.
How to install a wheelchair ramp
We live in a mobile society. So it must also be possible for wheelchair users to move without barriers and to be able to independently achieve goals outside of their private sphere of life. A wheelchair ramp can help here to get to the desired destination without any obstacles.
- A small ramp helps over the steps and you can build the ramp yourself without any problems. What you need are two long boards or a slightly wider board that is weatherproof and stable. Basically it is simply placed on the steps and in principle the ramp for the wheelchair is ready. What is missing is a stable substructure to prevent slipping.
- The substructure for your ramp must be firmly embedded in the steps or so tense that it cannot be released even when loaded with a wheelchair. To do this, take two bars at the height of the steps and the width of the ramp you want. After fitting the beams, the boards or the plate screwed.
- First, place the bars on the bottom and top steps. Then place a straight lath over the length and mark the slope so that the support later ends exactly with the edges of the steps. Then take the beams and place them in a clamping device, ideally a mobile workbench, and plan the desired slope.
- Now put the two bars back in the steps and measure with your straightedge to make small corrections. You may also have to compensate for one or the other step, for which a thin wooden slat is usually sufficient. If everything is suitable for the ramp, place your boards or the plate and screw it to the joists. Your wheelchair ramp is ready.
