Manufacture a pipe with an internal thread

instagram viewer

Do you need a pipe with an internal thread? No problem! All you need to do is know the thread dimensions and find a suitable pipe. With the right tools, it's made easy.

Sometimes you just need a piece of pipe with an internal thread to extend another pipe or to have more leverage, etc. The question is also: does it have to be a sealing thread or just a normal one? If it is a pure pipe connection, then it is usually inch thread, otherwise the corresponding standard dimensions apply.

You have to pay attention to this with the pipe

  1. Depending on what you need the pipe for, you choose the material. It is best to always use the same material as the counterpart.
  2. Determine which internal thread to cut. A metric thread can be an option, an inch thread or a left or right thread with a different pitch.
  3. You either have a connoisseur's eye for this or you can use nuts with a known thread and try which one can be screwed on without any problems. If in doubt, there are also so-called thread gauges that you place on the external thread and then read off the exact size.
  4. If you know the size of the internal thread, you can calculate the required internal diameter of the pipe. The corresponding DIN or ISO tables apply for this.
  5. Seal the pipe at the drain

How to cut the internal thread

  1. For a certain thread size you need the so-called core hole diameter. You can calculate this by multiplying the thread size by 0.8. This means that for a 10 mm internal thread you need a pipe with an internal diameter of 8 mm. Of course, it has to be bigger on the outside.
  2. There are taps for cutting. There are either three pieces that are used one after the other. They are usually marked with rings. First take the one with one ring and last with the three. Or it is a tap that combines all three stages. This makes it a little easier if the material is not too hard.
  3. Make sure that you place the tap vertically. Move the tap wrench carefully to the right (right-hand thread) until you feel a slight resistance. At this point, turn back briefly so that the chip that has been lifted up to that point can break and be transported through the chip grooves.
  4. Repeat this process bit by bit and just as carefully unscrew the drill at the end.
  5. The appropriate oiling is very important when producing a thread. This makes the entire process easier and ensures a clean, precise thread. At the same time it is used for cooling.

Finally, clean the thread and free it of chips. You can now screw the pipe together with a suitable grease or oil.
