Electric motors in tools also have wear parts

  • Most power tools such as drills or the Dremel 398 use so-called collector motors. This type of electric motor has so-called carbon brushes as wear parts.
  • These carbon brushes establish the electrical connection from the power supply to the armature (the rotating part of the electric motor).
  • Due to the movement of the armature, these carbon brushes wear out over time.
  • If the device no longer works properly (e.g. due to dropouts), you should replace these carbon brushes with new ones.

How to change the carbon brushes on the Dremel 398

  1. On the Dremel 398 you will find two openings for changing the carbon brushes, which are located on the upper and lower side of the device. These openings are located under corresponding covers that you must first remove.
  2. The remains of the old carbon brushes will probably meet you when you remove the covers. Before installing the new spare parts, make sure that the old brushes are completely removed.
  3. Now insert the new brushes into the openings in the device with the groove facing outwards so that the tongues can reach into them.
  4. Once you have reinserted the new carbon brushes and springs correctly, you can reinsert the covers for the brushes into the device. It is best to do the process separately for each brush.
