Shisha does not produce smoke

If your hookah produces little or no smoke, there are usually three possible causes: You are using the wrong tobacco, it is not heated sufficiently, or your water pipe is leaking.

Remedy if there is no smoke in the water pipe

From a chemical point of view, there is no smoke in the shisha, but rather steam. The moisture from the tobacco evaporates in it. The result is a mixture of liquid and air (vapor), none of solid and air (smoke). If this process does not start, go through the following points:

  1. The lack of smoke development can be due to insufficient heat. Use the tongs to lift the charcoal from the aluminum foil and this from the head of the shisha. Look at the tobacco, if it shows signs of burning, it is probably too dry. Go to point two. If it is not burned, put a thinner layer of foil on top and put the glowing coal back on. If that doesn't work, try the next point.
  2. Check that the tobacco you are using is sufficiently moist. German tobacco is always too dry. According to the law, it may only contain five percent moisture. Arabic products contain around 30 to 35 percent moisture. Feel your shisha tobacco. It must feel damp to the touch. In addition, it should have a damp shine. Try again with wetter tobacco.
  3. If you don't have damp tobacco, dampen it yourself. Add about ten to fifteen milliliters of molasses, glycerine or special flavor mixtures to 50 grams. Pour the tobacco into a freezer bag. Fill the pipe with it the next day.
  4. There should now be a sufficient amount of smoke. If this is not the case, there is a leak in the shisha. Reassemble them, but do not add water. Close the smoke release valve, if present. Blow into the mouthpiece. Only air is allowed to escape from the head, where you normally fill the tobacco. Check where the air is escaping. Clean or replace the seals in the appropriate place.
  5. Shisha tastes like coal - what to do?

You want to comfortably smoke a water pipe, but the smoke from your shisha tastes good ...

Correct filling and lighting of the shisha

Perhaps you made a mistake when filling or lighting? Go through all the necessary steps again.

  1. Fill the vessel with water and place the column of smoke on the opening. It should protrude about two to three centimeters into the water. Correct the amount of water if necessary.
  2. Place the head on the smoke column and the hose on one of the smoke connections of the column. Make sure the seals are OK.
  3. Fill the tobacco very loosely into the head. It must be loosened before filling. Tear up larger pieces in the process. The head of a shisha is not stuffed like a European pipe. A lot of air has to flow through the tobacco, otherwise there will be no smoke.
  4. Cover the tobacco with several layers of perforated aluminum foil. This must be about half a centimeter to a centimeter above the tobacco. Place glowing natural charcoal on the foil. The coal has to glow completely, it is not enough if only one corner is glowing. It is best to burn the coal through with a gas burner before placing it on the foil.
  5. Pull on the mouthpiece to create a negative pressure in the water container. Now the smoke should move through the column of smoke and the water into the air above the water in the bowl. Suck it down the tube to your mouth.

If the tobacco contains enough moisture and is exposed to sufficient heat, steam is always created in the shisha. If your water pipe is tight, you can suck it in without any problems.
