Changing the timing belt on the Ford Focus

Only a trained mechanic should ever change a timing belt on a car. Unless the owner of the car has acquired some knowledge in his long career as such and wants to take the risk of engine damage. For all interested parties, however, it is still briefly explained how a timing belt change on the Ford Focus could be made.

Changing the timing belt on the Ford Focus can be very complicated.
Changing the timing belt on the Ford Focus can be very complicated.

What you need:

  • Special tool in the form of:
  • OT ruler
  • OT pen
  • Original Ford timing belt set

Prepare the patient to change the timing belt

  1. First remove the V-belt.
  2. You can then remove the toothed belt cover.
  3. You must now set the engine to its TDC point. To do this, you need the special tools mentioned above. Note: Since an explanation of how the TDC point is set would be too extensive and also belong in a different category, it is not provided here for these reasons.
  4. Now you have to loosen the fastening screws of the toothed belt tensioner, insert the toothed belt tensioner into the Slide indicated direction (sometimes it is left, sometimes right, depending on the model) and the screws solve again. Once you have carried out these steps, you can now remove the toothed belt.

Install the new timing belt on the Ford Focus

  1. A timing belt change is comparable to an operation on an open heart. For this reason, you must now be careful that the motor is not turned, either intentionally or unintentionally. Should this happen, the new toothed belt would be placed on the wrong tooth and the result would be engine damage.

  3. The TDC position of the engine should be carefully checked again. Thank goodness Ford provides precise installation instructions with all of its models, including the Focus, with which the correct engine position can be checked.
  4. If the setting of the motor is correct, you can now start changing the toothed belt: Take the new toothed belt and start placing it on the teeth of the crankshaft. Proceed counterclockwise to do this.
  5. The toothed belt can be tensioned in two ways (depending on the model): Either you have to loosen the toothed belt tensioner and press against the belt or a spring has been supplied to stretch between the tensioner pulley and a pin under the camshaft sprocket will.
  6. It does not matter how the toothed belt is tensioned: The motor must then be turned a few revolutions. This leads to a secure tension of the toothed belt.

Reassemble the Ford Focus after changing the timing belt

If you've done the above properly, your engine nothing happened either. For this reason you can now reattach the units:

  1. Reinstall the toothed belt cover and then put on the V-belt. Of course, this must also be tensioned.
  2. If you want to be on the safe side, you should check the toothed belt tension the next time you visit or immediately in the workshop have it checked.

Note: Some Ford Focus models require that the water pump be replaced when the timing belt is changed.
