Warts are skin growths that are transmitted and caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV). Incidentally, warts have been discovered on mummies that are 3,000 years old. There are more than 100 different types of warts that look typical and are also typically found on certain areas of the body. Based on the body part and appearance, one can determine which warts are involved and how they can or must be treated.

Types of warts and their appearance

There are some subsets of the most common warts.

  • Common warts (Vulgar warts or stinging warts) usually develop on fingers or toes. They look rough and often have a granular bump that can always come off a bit.
  • brush warts (Filiform warts) often appear on the face on the eyelid, mouth, Nose, Neck or chin forward. They're small, look like little brushes, and the same color as them skin hereabouts.
  • Flat warts (Flat warts) often grow on the face, arms or legs and are rather inconspicuous because they are not raised. They are usually present in larger numbers. Adolescents, especially in puberty, often struggle with it. They look like polished, pink, brownish or yellowish.
  • plantar warts (plantar warts) develop on the soles of the feet or the undersides of the toes. These warts are not raised, but grow into the tissue, which is why they can often be quite painful. The pressure of the soles of the feet on the warts when walking or standing can cause them to grow deep into the tissue. It looks like a small hole surrounded by hardened yellowish tan skin. Minor surgery may be necessary to permanently remove them.
  • Periungual warts (under the fingernail) grow on the fingernail or toenail and can even continue to grow underneath, which can destroy the nail bed and is quite painful. This type of wart is often caused by fingernail biting. The skin is softened and traumatized, making it easier for the virus to penetrate.
  • At genital warts you should definitely see a doctor, because in this case it shows that you have had to deal with warts of the type that can also cause cervical cancer. Genital warts are not cancer, but they can be an indicator.
  • age warts are harmless and as the name suggests they tend to come with age, they are flat, somewhat coarse-grained on the surface and can vary in pigmentation from brownish to black look. Here it is important to observe that one recognizes a possible change that can indicate skin cancer.

How to prevent warts?

Warts are very contagious due to the viruses that cause them. So if one person in the family has warts, you should definitely not share the same towels, nail scissors, tweezers, etc. use.

  • Wash your hands regularly after touching warts.
  • Wear bathing shoes in the swimming pool, gym or similar public facilities
  • feet and keep hands dry. Moist skin is more susceptible to the penetration of germs

Do not scratch or rub existing warts, otherwise you spread the virus further and the area can become inflamed and lead to a bacterial infection.

Warts are often just a cosmetic or visual problem. There are a variety of wart removers available in pharmacies, often containing salicylic acid (burning the wart).

Doctors work with either liquid nitrogen, lasers, high-frequency current or the scalpel. The respective treatment method is decided and applied individually. You should consult a dermatologist for this.
