What is a cube root?

You've probably heard the term cube root in math class. But what is a cube root and how do you calculate with it?

These are roots and cube roots - general explanation

  • root are, in general terms, the inverse functions of raising a certain number to the power.
  • This becomes clear simply from square roots. If you square a number, you get the square of that number. If you now take the square root of the square, the result is the original number.
    Example 32 = 9, 2√9 = 91/2 = 3.
  • If only the root of a number is mentioned, the square root is always meant. This also applies in the event that no number on the root sign indicates what kind of root it should be. Again, you can assume a square root.
  • You probably know the expression "cubic" from three dimensions. A volume is always given in cubic - for example m3, cm3, mm3. You can see that "cubic" goes with the power of 3. This is also the case with cube roots.
  • So if you pull the cube root or the third root of a number, the result is the number that, raised to the power of 3, gives the starting number. Written mathematically, it looks like this using an example: 3√27 = 3, because 3 * 3 * 3 = 33 = 27.
  • How do you calculate the edge length of a cube?

The volume of a cube is given and you want to find out which edge length ...

  • When looking for the cube root, a small superscript three in front of the root sign must always indicate this mathematically.

Examples of cube roots

As with the square roots, there are a few simple cube roots that should be known.

  • The cube root of 1 is of course also 1, because 1 * 1 * 1 = 1.
  • If you extract the cube root of 8, the result is 2. Because 2 * 2 * 2 = 8.
  • 33 = 27. Hence, the cube root of 27 is the number 3.
  • 4*4*4= 64. thus is 3√64 = 4

The cube root of higher Counting or of numbers whose third root cannot be determined straight away, you can use the approximate method or simply a scientific one calculator calculate.
