VIDEO: Design your own patch

With the sewing machine and a little patience, patches can easily be designed yourself. All necessary materials can be found in the craft or fabric store.

How to design a patch yourself

  1. Materials that do not fray are suitable as a substrate for the patch - preferably a slightly thicker felt. If fraying at the edges is desired, you can also use stiffer denim.
  2. Do not use cheap craft felt, but rather invest a little more in synthetic felt or real wool felt. Craft felt can shrink or discolour when washed and ruin the whole piece.
  3. Cut out the desired shape for the surface from the felt. It can be a circle, a square or some other, preferably simple, shape.
  4. Once you have prepared the surface, you can use a pen or white chalk to sketch out what the patch should look like later.
  5. Spice up monochrome T-shirts with patches - instructions

Plain T-shirts are like unpainted canvases - boring and uninteresting. First …

  6. There are (almost) no limits to the appearance of the patch. Perhaps you would like to cut out a tree and clouds from thin felt of a different color and create a natural motif? Or you don't use any other applications and simply embroider a smiley on the background.
  7. Once you have found your design, it goes to the sewing machine. Sew on the different parts of the design with a straight stitch close to the edge.
  8. Once you have sewn your design in place, stitch along the edge of the patch with a tight zigzag stitch. This gives it a closed edge and will last longer.
  9. If you don't want to sew on appliqués, but want to embroider your entire motif, it is even easier: Draw the motif and then sew it with a tight zigzag stitch. Perhaps this will create a spider web in no time at all, onto which you can sew a small artificial spider.
  10. Feel free to take a look in the leftover fabric box: Perhaps you want to sew a bow onto satin ribbon or attach some frills to the outside of the patch? All of this is possible.
  11. Buttons are also suitable for decorating the patch - for example as the eyes of an animal or as the center of a flower. They are simply sewn in place after the patch has been completed.
  12. Start by designing a simple patch yourself. When you have become more confident, venture into more complicated subjects.
  13. You can sew the finished patch onto the desired part by hand or with a sewing machine.

Have fun designing and sew!
