VIDEO: Sew your own beanie

You can use whatever material you have in your closet for the beanie. Be it knitted sweaters, mesh tops or long-sleeved shirts made of stretchy fabrics. If you prefer to buy fabric, there is no limit to the material. Light cotton fabrics can also be made into a beanie.

Make a recycling beanie yourself

  1. Put the selected shirt or sweater in front of you. Draw a line from armpit to armpit. Cut along the line separating the top from the bottom.
  2. Set the upper part aside. Cut open one of the side seams from the lower part. Now unfold the part completely. The cuffs of the sweater / shirt are later also the cuffs of the beanie. You now have to measure the circumference of the beanie cuff using your head.
  3. Use a tape measure to measure the circumference of your head. Tape measure: Place the 0-line of the tape measure in the middle of the forehead at the hairline. Run the rest of the band over the ear to the nape of the neck over the other ear to the beginning of the band. Read the circumference on the tape. For example 53 cm.
  4. Measure the length of the circumference at the cuff of the fabric. Add 1 cm seam allowance to the 53 cm (example). Simply cut off the remaining length. Fold the fabric into three equal parts (example: 54 cm: 3).

  6. Pin the fabric together with pins for a better hold in the open areas. Make sure that all pages are on top of each other.

Sew the beanie together

  1. You decide for yourself how long the beanie should be later. As before, here is an example for a better understanding. On average, the length is 30 cm from the cuff to the tip of the cap.
  2. Measure the length of 30 cm from the cuff upwards. Mark the spot. From this point measure out the center of the width. Mark this point again.
  3. Now a semicircle has to be cut as the tip of the hat. To do this, measure 26 cm upwards from the cuff on the right and left sides. Mark the spots. Using a line with the trick marker, connect the markings on the right and left side with the middle. A semicircle should now have been created. Cut along the line.
  4. Remove the pins and unfold the fabric. In front of you you can see the pointed (roofs). Now fold the sides together, edge to edge. Pin the side seam together and sew it with a Lock stitch together.
  5. Connect the three tips together with a pin. You sew the resulting 3 open lengths one after the other with the lock stitch.

When you are done with the steps, turn your beanie over. The seams are now on the inside. Your hat is finished without a pattern or sewing machine.
