Central beams are still often used in today's double beds. They serve as additional stabilization for the entire bed.

Install the center beam correctly

These instructions describe how to build a central beam into a double bed in a sensible and practical way.

  • Before you can insert the central beam, you should first set up the base frame of your double bed. Your base frame consists of four wooden boards, which are screwed together at the edges with angles. There are also double beds that can be put together with wooden dowels or simple screws.
  • As the name suggests, the middle bar is screwed exactly in the middle between the two side parts of the base frame on the head side and on the foot side. Here, too, small steel angles are used for screwing, with the help of which the central beam is attached to the head and foot sides.
  • Before you screw the middle bar, you should have measured exactly that the middle bar is also exactly in the middle. If this is not the case, the slatted frames will not have a proper support, making it impossible to sleep in your double bed.

Make the stabilizer yourself

  • Since the middle bar serves not only to stabilize, but also to support the two slatted frames for your double bed, the middle bar should be made sufficiently wide. If you build your bed and your central beam yourself, the central beam should not be attached directly flush with the base frame.

Of course, you can also buy a double bed from a furniture dealer. It will be individual ...

  • So you should screw the middle bar offset in height. When this is done, the two slatted frames have been given an additional support on the central beam in addition to the base frame.
  • If you're building a bed for one person, you don't really need a center beam unless you're building a loft bed. In the case of the loft bed, central beams are also drawn in so that - if a slatted frame gives way - the fall of the sleeper is stopped. In this case, the center bar serves as a protective mechanism.

A central beam is used to support slatted frames in a double bed. However, they are also used for stabilization and protection.
