Build a cupboard for the washing machine yourself

A freestanding washing machine isn't really an ornament to the room. How about if you hid the machine in a cupboard that also has a storage space for detergent or other items? You don't have to hire a carpenter for this, because you can easily build this part yourself from Ytong stones.

A washing machine is not necessarily an ornament.
A washing machine is not necessarily an ornament.

What you need:

  • Ytong stones
  • tile glue
  • 1 kitchen worktop (leftover piece)
  • Edge band (optional)
  • 4 long screws
  • Board as a door
  • Furniture handle with fastening material
  • 2 hinges with fastening material
  • spatula
  • Yardstick
  • Pen
  • Spirit level
  • drilling machine
  • screwdriver

Hiding the washing machine in a closet has two advantages. On the one hand, the device is no longer visible at first glance and, on the other hand, you can use the top plate of the cabinet as a storage area.

How to plan a washing machine cabinet

  • The normal dimensions of a washing machine are around 84 cm high, 60 cm wide and 54 cm deep. In planning and in building of the cabinet, you should take into account that it must offer enough space so that the vibrations of the device cannot be transferred to the cabinet.
  • If you do not plan to saw the Ytong bricks, you can buy bricks in the following dimensions for the washing machine cabinet: 20 cm high, 17.5 cm wide and 60 cm long. If you get 10 stones with these dimensions, you save yourself having to saw to size and piece together.
  • To connect the Ytong stones together, you can either buy special glue or use very simple tile glue. Since the washing machine cabinet will not be exposed to any great stress, this adhesive is completely sufficient.
  • So that you have storage space above the machine, you can get a leftover piece of a kitchen worktop from the hardware store. Have it cut to 60 x 100cm and hide the visible edges with one Edge band.
  • Build your own kitchen from Ytong

You can not only build walls and houses from Ytong, but also furniture yourself ...

  • If you want, you can equip the cabinet with a door. For this you need a plate 98 cm high and 64.5 cm wide that is not too heavy, as well as a furniture handle and two matching hinges.

How to build the simple closet

  1. Mix the tile adhesive according to the instructions on the package and wall 5 of the long stones on top of each other at a distance of 65 cm (inner dimension). Then let the glue dry well.
  2. If you have measured the distance correctly, the worktop now fits exactly over it and is flush with the outer edges of the Ytong stones.
  3. The easiest way to fix the worktop is to screw it onto the Ytong stones from above. However, pre-drill the holes in the countertop. It is more elegant but also more complex if you attach two horizontal strips to the Ytong walls from the inside and screw the worktop onto them from below.
  4. Now you have to attach the door. Think about which page you want to open it to. Then attach the two hinges to the board accordingly and in an exactly straight line and also screw the furniture handle tight.
  5. Then hold the door in the desired position by placing the hinges on the front edge of the inside of the cabinet. This works best with a helper. Make sure that the door has 1 cm clearance on the top and bottom so that it does not drag across the floor or on the worktop.
  6. Mark the position of the hinges on the Ytong stones, and then measure again whether they would sit in an exactly straight line. If this is not the case, the door would hang crooked and cannot close properly.
  7. Then pre-drill the screw holes and insert the dowels. Screw the hinges into this.
  8. Finally, you can slide the washing machine into the new cabinet and align it. It is important that the device does not move when it is being spun, otherwise it will hit the Ytong walls sooner or later and the vibration can cause them to collapse.

If the bare stones bother you, you can plaster or prime and paint them.
