Broken hinge from the cabinet door

If a cupboard door is used too much or the piece of furniture is a bit older, a hinge can break out. What can you do to repair the damage?

What you need:

  • Window kit
  • Component adhesive
  • Hinge screws

The hinge joint connects the cabinet with the matching door. This is attached to the hinge and can thus be opened and closed. As a result, the joint is exposed to a lot of stress and can break after a while. The hinge can then be repaired or replaced entirely.

How to fix the hinge joint

  • If the hinge has broken out of the cabinet door, it usually creates a small hole in the material of the door. When it comes to plywood, there are often still some chips left in it, which you should first remove (e. B. remove with a vacuum cleaner). You can fill the hole with a matching color window kit, for example.
  • At this point, the hinge joint should not be reattached as the kit does not carry it well enough. Alternatively, you can also use two-component glue and use it to fix the hinge.
  • This is also available at the hardware store and holds so firmly that you can attach your hinge again in the same place - i.e. into the adhesive.
  • To do this, you need to put enough glue into the hole that has been created, press the hinge joint lightly into this mass and wait about three minutes. Then leave the material for approx. Cure for 15 minutes before putting weight on the door again.

Install a new hinge joint

  • If the joint is broken so that it can no longer be used, or if you fail to glue the hinge to the previous location, you can install a new hinge joint.
  • If the previous hinge is no longer usable, you can find suitable alternatives in many different sizes in the hardware store.
  • The hinge joints are usually fastened with two screws. Screws that are as far into the wood protrude into the cabinet door, as this also holds better.
  • You can then attach the hinge a little further above or below the previous position. To do this, turn the screws slowly into the wood. If the material is a little stronger, you can first “pre-drill” the holes with a pointed object.
