Build push-up bars yourself

With push-up bars, training becomes more flexible and effective. Unfortunately, finished models cannot be adjusted in height or adapted for large or small hands. If you build it yourself, however, you can create an individual piece of sports equipment.

Even as a layperson, you can make bespoke push-up bars yourself.
Even as a layperson, you can make bespoke push-up bars yourself.

What you need:

  • PVC pipe
  • 8 matching end caps
  • two 45- and two 90-degree PVC joints
  • two T-joints
  • Foam
  • saw
  • Primer and adhesive solution for plastic

Make push-up bars yourself - this is how it works

  1. Each of the push-up bars will be made up of three pieces of pipe. Piece A determines the height of the push-up bar, piece B determines the length of the grip surface and piece C provides the necessary support.
  2. First determine the height and cut two pieces of pipe with these values.
  3. Also make two pieces of pipe for the handle length you want.
  4. Connect piece A to piece B with a 90 degree PVC hinge and stick a 45 degree hinge on the end of piece B.
  5. Place the resulting connection on the table in front of you and measure the required length for piece C starting from the 45-degree joint. The ends of piece A and C must be long enough that piece B will later run straight.
  6. Build a skimmer yourself - instructions

  7. Saw two pieces of C.
  8. Remove the joints one more time and prime the ends of all the pipe sections.
  9. Apply the glue solution to the pre-treated areas and attach a T-piece to one end of piece A, and a 90-degree joint to the other.
  10. Attach piece B and attach the 45 degree hinge to its second end. Now plug pipe C onto this, with a T-piece at the end.
  11. Now make four equally short pieces of pipe that will serve as feet. Insert these into all unused openings in the T-pieces and close each one with an end cap.
  12. Once the glue has dried, you can stick thin, absorbent foam to the PVC pipes.

Tips for the fitness device

  • Choose sturdy PVC pipe because the push-up bars will have to withstand heavy loads.
  • Follow the instructions on the primer and adhesive solution to ensure that the bonded surfaces last.
  • Allow sufficient drying time before using the push-up bars training insert. Areas that are still damp could loosen again as a result of the excessive stress.
