Children's room: build wooden shelves yourself
Children need space to play and that's why it's important to “create space” in the children's room. Wooden shelves are ideal for this, as you can simply fill them up with boxes and other utensils rather than putting everything back in a tidy cupboard.
Self-made children's room shelves are a hit
There are basically two variants for building your own shelves. Either the attachment of rails to the wall using dowels and screws. It's easy, because you only need to insert the holder and the boards into the shelving system. In addition, the shelves can be adjusted in height at any time. The other variant is the classic one with side walls and is almost the same as a cabinet without Doors.
- With the classic version of your shelf for the children's room, you need two side walls, two shelves and some shelves to build yourself. In order to be able to insert the shelves flexibly in height, first drill two rows of holes in each of the side walls at a distance of about five centimeters. To do this, make a section or Strips of wood a template that you pre-drill.
- Then place the template on the side walls, fix it with two screw clamps, and drill the holes about one centimeter deep. They are later used to insert the shelf supports, which are usually 4 to 6 mm thick. Make sure that you always drill from the same side, i.e. always from the top or always from the bottom edge. The holes must be exactly the same in height and spacing, otherwise your shelves will be crooked later. You need two rows of holes per side wall, about four centimeters apart from the front or the trailing edge.
- The shelves themselves must be two millimeters shorter than the shelves. The shelves are screwed directly to the side walls. To do this, pre-drill the side walls and screw them together with two or three Spax screws. You have to be careful when screwing in so that the wood does not tear at the edges of the side walls. Then your shelf is actually ready. All you have to do is use the small pins as shelf supports and put the boards on top. Your shelf in the nursery is more stable if you also nail on a hardboard back wall.
- In order to compensate for unevenness on the floor, it is still advisable to attach four feet. To do this, you can use pre-turned ones from the hardware store or simply small wooden strips. Your shelf for the children's room is quicker and easier if you convert a simple wooden cellar shelf that is inexpensive in the hardware store into a shelf. You already have all the holes, screws and bases ready. All you have to do is put a couple of wooden panels on top and, if necessary, stiffen the finished shelf with transverse battens. You can achieve the same effect if you dowel the shelf to the wall with two small angles.
