Build garbage can cladding out of wood
Garbage cans don't look nice and take up a lot of space in the garage. You can solve this problem with a trash can box. But these are quite expensive. If you want to use the advantages of a barrel house cheaply, you can simply build a garbage can cladding yourself from wood. The effort depends on how proficient you are at home improvement.
A trash can box doesn't have to be expensive. When you take off the garbage can cladding wood build, the price is less than 100 €. Nevertheless, you should pay attention to quality, especially when it comes to wood.
Wood and other materials for outdoor use
If you are building something out of wood for outdoors, you will need to use different materials than you would for the interior.
- It starts with the wood. You can build the garbage box out of inexpensive spruce wood. However, there are woods for outdoor use that are insignificantly more expensive, but more weather-resistant. Domestic Douglas fir and larch cost around two to three euros per meter. These are the first choice. More noble, but also more expensive wood is hardwood, such as oak or robinia.
- You buy screws and possibly other metal parts made of stainless steel. The normal, brass-colored screws in particular break off after a few years due to corrosion.
- That roof from the barrel house you provide extra protection against moisture. The cheapest method is commercial roofing felt. You get these in different colors. There is even roofing felt that looks like shingles. Of course, the roof can also be clad with real roof shingles. However, this is more expensive and more complex.
- In the outdoor area, wood usually needs wood protection. With Douglas fir and larch, it is sufficient to oil it. If you want to prevent graying, you have to resort to glazes or varnishes. For spruce, pine or other coniferous woods, you need varnishes or glazes for adequate wood protection.

Design and assemble the garbage can cladding
Once you have the materials, start building the garbage can cabinet. It doesn't matter whether you have a bin or a dumpster.
- First mark off the later place of the garbage can box. Make sure, however, that you leave enough space on the left and right as well as in the back and front. There is also space for a broom or bucket.
- In case you have a concreted one Underground dowel the joist hangers for the vertical supports directly to the floor. Use drive sleeves for loose surfaces or pavement (remove stones beforehand). You hit these directly in the ground.
- Then determine the height of the vertical bars. Remember that the garbage can cladding gets so high that the bin inside can still be opened.
- Furthermore, the front supports are about ten centimeters higher, so that the roof will later have a slope (of about 10-15%).
- Now screw the joists into the joist hangers. Leave some air between the beam and the floor so that the wood does not stand in the damp.
- Strut the vertical bars above and below with horizontal bars. Use the metal brackets for assembly. You fit the upper struts in such a way that you get a sloping roof. For this purpose, the vertical bars are also provided with a bevel at the top.
- Now you dress them up walls and the roof from the outside. To do this, screw the boards directly onto the beams. Leave a gap of about five millimeters between the boards so that the wood can work.
- For the door, build a "Z" out of boards and cover it up as well, as described in step six. The boards on the left, right and above should protrude about two centimeters. This means that you have no unsightly edges when viewed from the front.
- Now screw the hinges to the door and insert them into the garbage can cladding. You can also mount a bolt to lock it.
- Finally, give the wood the desired paint and nail the roofing felt to the roof.
