VIDEO: Determine coordinates with an atlas

As different as the degrees are, they have two things in common: There is approximately 110 km between the respective distances. And the further you are from the equator, the higher the degrees.

Determine latitude with atlas

You can recognize the latitude in the atlas by the degree symbol ° next to the number.

  • Latitudes are in the northern hemisphere and the southern hemisphere. You can distinguish these two by "N" for north and "S" for south, in front of which are the degrees.
  • The equator lies between the two poles and thus divides the earth in two halves. The equator is marked in the atlas by a thick, broad line and has the coordinates "zero degrees = 0 °".

The longitude in the atlas - explanation

The longitudes in the atlas are directed to the west and east away from the equator. The number of longitudes amounts to a total of 360 pieces.

Show coordinates - this is how it works on a globe

Every point on earth can be precisely determined using coordinates. Do you know …

  • In contrast to the latitudes, these have their starting and destination points at the north or south pole.
  • You can see the direction of longitude, by the letters "W" for west and "O" for east.

This is how you determine coordinates

  1. Pick a map from the atlas and then select a location.
  2. Next, you investigate the location of the city. First of all, the decisive factor is whether this is in the northern or southern hemisphere, i.e. the latitude. If the location is in the northern hemisphere, the number of degrees increases towards the top. In the southern hemisphere, the increase in degrees goes in the other direction. You have the first clue.
  3. The next point in the definition includes the position of the place on the longitude. Towards the west, the degrees for determining the coordinates become larger. To the east, the longitudes become higher to the right. The next determination is now obvious.
  4. Now pay attention to the edge of the sheet on the partial map. the Counting in blue letters on the right and left side indicate the latitude. Move your finger (or use a ruler) from the location to the left or right, depending on which side is closer. The latitude is now fixed.
  5. The longitude information can also be found in blue numbers above and below. Proceed with the exact determination as with the latitudes.
  6. In order to write down a precise description of a place, choose the following writing style (the numbers are chosen arbitrarily): 45 ° 0 ′ N and 10 ° 20 ′ O.

Finally, it should be said that you always first have to enter the latitude of the entire coordinates to determine locations.
