Make the right use of the Deutsche Bahn family ticket
A short trip or a longer trip is fun for the whole family. Your children can move about on the train, so the whole family arrives at their destination more relaxed than by car. The railway offers special family tickets for this.
Take the whole family on a nice trip to see another area. With the family ticket of the train you can travel all over Germany at a budget price. You, your partner and your children under the age of 15 can travel with the ticket and if you want you can take other people with you for a small price.
The train family ticket
- You can use the Deutsche Bahn family ticket if two adults travel together. Your own children travel for free if they are under 15 years of age.
- You can also take other people with you, up to a maximum of four, who can then travel with you for a surcharge.
- If you have the BahnCard 25, you will also receive a 25 percent discount on the family ticket.
- You can buy the family ticket a maximum of 92 days before the day of travel, but no later than three days in advance. But book early because the number of tickets is limited.
- It is best to book the family ticket at the counter in your train station. A ticket is valid for a single journey, but you can also book the return journey with a family ticket. Your children between the ages of 6 and 14 are entered on the ticket; you can take children under 6 with you without an entry.
- The ticket is valid for a specific train, but if you decide to take another train it will be quite expensive. However, Deutsche Bahn offers an insurance policy in which, in certain cases, you will be reimbursed the travel price in the event of cancellation, this insurance is called DB Spar- und Spezialpreis-Versicherung.
- If you want to travel at night, it will cost you a surcharge.
