The Smart Fortwo caused a sensation when it was launched in 1998. While most of the other automobile manufacturers were expanding their vehicle models, a miniature car with a length of 2.5 m suddenly appeared on the market. The vehicle was offered with both gasoline and diesel engines.

The different engines of the Smart Fortwo

  • When it was launched in 1998, the first Smart Fortwo were offered with a three-cylinder petrol engine. This was equipped with a turbocharger.
  • The displacement was initially 0.6 liters. The maximum output was 33 kW. This enabled a top speed of 135 km / h to be achieved.
  • A little later, a unit with a displacement of 0.7 liters came onto the market. The power was already 40 kW. This made a faster sprint possible. But even with this model, the top speed was limited to 135 km / h.

  • The three-cylinder gasoline engines have been available with outputs between 45 and 75 kW since that year. This also allowed the top speed to be increased to 155 km / h.
  • The diesel units are now equipped with common rail direct injection, which means they even meet the Euro 5 emissions standard. The power is 40 kW and the fuel consumption is 3.3 liters of diesel per 100 km.

Hardly any other vehicle has attracted as much attention in recent years as the Smart Fortwo. Thanks to the modern and economical engines, this small car also has low maintenance costs.
