If you live in Berlin and want to go to London by car, things get a bit complicated - there are no direct ferries from England to Germany. But you can find a connection to London via neighboring countries.

Possible ferries to England

  • From the continent you can reach England via various ports, well-known are Calais, Dunkerque, Ostend, Hoek van Holland and Esbjerg. The ports that are further south are not of interest to you if you are traveling from Germany.
  • There are no direct routes to London from these locations; the ports in England are Dover or Harwich. Both ports of arrival are approximately the same distance from London. You have to drive about 125 km.

Useful routes from Germany to London

As is well known, Berlin is located quite far to the east of Germany, so the journey to the port from which your ferry to England leaves is quite a long one.

  • You have to drive over 900 km to Calais, and Dunkerque and Ostend are hardly any closer. Therefore, a crossing from these ports makes little sense. However, the crossings are only short. So if you only want to be at sea for a short time, the long journey makes sense.
  • It's only 714 km to Hook of Holland, but the ferry leaves 6 hours before you get to Harwich. In total, you need approx. 850 km with the automobile drive before you are in London.
  • By car to London - tips

Allegedly there are many roads to Rome, but if you prefer to go to London by car ...

  • It gets even shorter if you travel to Esbjerg in Denmark - that's only 582 km. From there you can drive to Harwich. The entire driving distance is therefore only approx. 700 km, but you are on the ferry for 19 hours. You can spend the night in a cabin on board so that the journey is not too uncomfortable. There is a room for the children to run around and your pet can also go on board.

When planning your trip, keep in mind that you definitely need to plan an overnight stay for the outward and return journey. The 6-hour drive from Hook of Holland to Harwich is not enough as a break. If you want to arrive in London as relaxed as possible, it is certainly best if you choose the route against the route via Esbjerg.
