What a giant bird! With a maximum capacity of 853 seats, the Airbus A380 is the largest airliner in the world. How many passengers ultimately take off in the superjumbo, however, depends on the airlines that commission it. The airlines have definitely achieved their goal: more passengers can be transported at once - that saves kerosene and reduces costs.

The evolution of the A380

How can as many passengers as possible be transported at the lowest possible cost? This consideration led to the development of the Airbus A380.

  • The A380 is produced by the European aircraft manufacturer Airbus, based in Toulouse, France. The superjumbo is the largest civil airliner that ever went into series production.
  • As early as the 1980s, in view of rising kerosene prices, airlines were faced with the problem of how to minimize operating costs. Saving weight while increasing the number of passengers was recognized as a primary goal.
  • At the same time, the external dimensions of the aircraft should not exceed the standards. This is important for that plane can move on the existing taxiways of the airports and the existing ground handling (e.g. B. Passenger boarding bridges) can be used.
  • In 2001, Airbus began designing the A380. By using the most modern materials such as glass fiber reinforced aluminum, which is extremely thin and is nevertheless extraordinarily robust, the manufacturer managed to increase the weight of the machine considerably to reduce.

  • In order to increase the number of passengers while maintaining the same length of the machine, Airbus came up with the idea of making the aircraft with two passenger decks to equip: a slightly narrower upper deck for up to eight passengers per row of seats and a wider main deck for up to 10 passengers per row Line. The two levels are connected by stairs and transport elevators for food and drinks.
  • The prototype of the superjumbo was presented to the international press in January 2005. The test flight took place on 27. April of the same year; At that time there was only a six-person crew on board. The first regular test flights with passengers were carried out between September and November 2006.
  • In December 2006, the A380 received regulatory approval from the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and the American Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

That's how many passengers fit in the superjumbo

In theory, the superjumbo can get quite tight for passengers. In practice, however, the airlines rely on comfort, at least in the expensive seats.

  • The basic version of the superjumbo is the A380-800, which has been in service since 2007. This aircraft giant was sold to Singapore Airlines, Qantas, Air France and Lufthansa for their long-haul flights; it is approved for a maximum of 853 passengers.
  • However, the actual seat capacity differs depending on the airline; Most of the time, the machines were only commissioned for 525 to 555 passengers, in order to offer more comfort, especially to first-class and business-class guests. With 555 seats, there are usually 22 seats in first class, 102 seats in business class and 431 seats in economy class.
  • An even larger version of the superjumbo is only in the project stage. This A380-900 is designed to transport up to 963 passengers. How many passengers will ultimately travel in it depends on the airline's orders. The typical capacity will probably be around 650 seats in total. Because of the problems with the series production of the A380-800, this ultrajumbo is not expected to be produced until 2020. (All information as of July 2013)

This giant bird is something special. Maybe you will have the opportunity to take off with it.
