Working with Layers in the GIMP

This is how you change each level

  1. In the GIMP, open a blank document. To do this, go to the "New" entry in the "File" menu. Enter 640 and 400 pixels for width and height and then click the "OK" button. You see a white document in the work area.

  2. Use the "Layer" menu to insert a "New Layer" with a transparent background. You will not notice any change in the document, as if you had just put a transparent film over it.
  3. Repeat step two so that another level is opened, i.e. there are three levels. On the right in the dialog window you should see an overview in which the levels are listed one below the other.
  4. If this is not the case, open the menu "Window", "Dockable Dialogs" and click on the entry Layers. You can now easily switch between the levels by clicking on a level here, which means that it is marked.

You can now use all the different tools and settings on each level, return to them at any time as described above and change or remove them. You can open and delete as many new levels as you want or need.
