Estimate additional costs for apartment
If you only have to pay the monthly rent for your apartment, you will ask yourself what additional costs will have to be paid after a year and maybe in between. A sensible assessment and saving money can save tearing a financial hole.
Average values for ancillary costs
- In Germany there are always numbers that answer the question of extra costs as a guideline. The German Tenants' Association is a great help here.
- This gives an average of 2.19 euros per square meter and per month for the costs in addition to the basic rent (status: 2009). So if you have a home over 70 square meters, then, based on this standard value, you can expect monthly expenses of almost 155 euros.
- You should keep in mind that such a value must be assessed for a limited time. As gas costs rise, so can housing expenses.
- Since the 2.19 euros are average households, you should also know how big an average home is. The Federal Central Office for Civic Education gives a value of 2.02 for 2011. If you live alone, you would have much lower expenses; if you have a family with children or a shared flat, these would increase accordingly.
Determine expenses for the apartment
- You have determined how high the average ancillary costs are in German households. It is now important to conclude from this what information can be related to you. A word that plays a major role here can be found in the comparison.
- Investigate whether you treat hot water, sewage, heating and garbage the same way other households do.
- It is possible that you and your spouse have not yet had any children in the apartment and that you work full-time because of this usually only take care of dirty dishes at dinner and a large part of the clothes when cleaning hand over. One could conclude from this that the ancillary costs - due to the less frequently running washing machine and dishwasher - are falling.
