- The soft drink was invented by the American John Stith Pemberton. He lived at the end of the 19th Century and was a pharmacist.
- Soon after graduating, he started mixing branded products. He produced mixtures like the Eureka Oil and Southern Cordial. But his best known work was Coca cola.
- Since about 1885 Pemberton became addicted to morphine. He began to be interested in the coca plant, hoping that the cocaine might stop him from using morphine. In June 1887 he had the drink Coca-Cola, which at that time also contained cocaine, patented.
- Just two days after his patent application was approved, he sold his rights to the dealer Candler for just $ 2,300 to raise money for his addiction. He passed away the following year.
- Candler founded "The Coca Cola Company" in 1892 and registered the Coca Cola brand. In Atlanta, the company's headquarters, Candler had the first tower built, which was taller than the church tower.
- His son Howard later took over the company and sold it to Ernest Woodruff and Eugene Stetson for $ 25 million. Woodruff's son, Robert W. Woodruff, made Coca Cola what we know today and began to spread the drink worldwide.

Interesting facts about Coca Cola
- Originally, the shower was traded as medicine. It should help against fatigue, depression and impotence and other ailments.
- Candler also massively advertised the product as a miracle cure. Customers soon wished that the drink would no longer only be sold in pharmacies. This is how Coca Cola became a soft drink in 1905.
- In 1931 he painted the well-known picture of Santa Claus, a fat old man with a beard and a red coat. It was the Coca-Cola advertisement this year that invented Santa Claus in this form.
- Coca-Cola has not contained cocaine since 1902. However, extracts from coca leaves were still used as a flavor. The company denies that this is still the case today. To date, the company has a special permit to import coca leaves.
- The recipe should be kept top secret. According to the list of ingredients, the shower consists of water, Sugar, carbonic acid, the coloring agent E 150d, phosphoric acid, caffeine and flavor.
