Paint arches on the wall
Children in particular love the colors of the rainbow and so it is not surprising when they suddenly get the idea to embellish their room wall accordingly. In order to create a great rainbow, not only the color sequence should be right. It is especially beautiful when the arches are semicircular rather than oval. You will succeed with a trick.
At the latest when your child wants a wall with a rainbow, you will firstly ask yourself what colors a rainbow should be actually has and secondly, how to get such huge arches on the wall without the subject looking like one Easter egg.
What colors is a rainbow?
- You have certainly seen a rainbow in all its beauty before, but the color scheme and sequence of the natural phenomenon will probably not occur to you straight away.
- The colors red, orange, yellow, green, light blue, indigo and purple are seen from the upper edge. The combination and the sequence of colors result in the harmonious overall picture. For the wall motif, however, it is sufficient if you use six colors and instead of a light blue and an indigo-colored sheet paint a stripe in a medium shade of blue.
Set the size of the rainbow
If you were to draw small arcs, a compass would be helpful. You will probably not have a specimen of this size and will therefore have to find other means.
- Determine the course of the imaginary horizon - that is, where the lower ends of the arches meet should be - and draw a thin, straight line across it with the help of a spirit level and pencil the wall.
- Determine where you want the highest point of the arc to be. Since it will be an exact semicircle, you need to take into account that the width of the finished rainbow will be twice its height.
- Now you need a piece of string, the length of which corresponds to the course of the outer edge of the upper arch. Add about four inches and cut the cord from the ball.
- In the middle of the horizon line, hammer in a small nail and carefully tie the string to it. The nail should not be hammered in all the way to the head, but it should not wobble under any circumstances.

Paint arcs - this is how it will be even
Now you can start sketching the outline of the rainbow on the wall. Since you are working with a pencil, you can correct any mistakes relatively easily.
- Pinch the loose end of the string between your thumb and forefinger and add the pencil. Hold the pen as low as possible at the tip, pull the cord taut and wrap the pen without tying it up.
- Then, with the cord tightened and the pen positioned exactly straight, sketch the outer edge of the semicircular arc on the wall.
- You determine how wide the individual arches are. For example, if you want to be 10 centimeters wide, stretch the string up to the arc you just painted and then place the pencil 10 centimeters lower. Tension the string again between your thumb and forefinger as written above and paint the next bow on the wall.
In this way you bring 7 even arcs on the wall one after the other, which you can then color in with the appropriate wall colors.
