Find the right positions for surround speakers

The idea of ​​surround boxes is to give the listener the feeling of being "in the action". It is therefore a basic requirement to ensure that all audio sources (= speakers) are approximately the same distance from the listener.

  • Modern systems can compensate for different distances through adjustments, but only to a certain extent. Therefore try to adhere to this principle as closely as possible.
  • All speakers in a surround system are marked according to their position: front left / right, rear left / right, center, subwoofer. This corresponds to a 5.1 surround system.
  • In systems with an even larger number of boxes, the top / bottom variants are also covered. Of course, this also requires an even more sensitive positioning of the boxes
  • Ideally, the listener sits in the center of a square room. The boxes front left / right and rear left / right are then in the 4 corners of the room.

  • The television is in the middle of one of the walls (between the two front speakers). The center speaker is now as close as possible to the television, ideally directly below, in front of or above.
  • Positioning is not that important for the subwoofer, as it mainly reproduces sounds in such low frequency ranges that they can be felt rather than heard. Nevertheless, if possible, it should be positioned in front of the listener. The most common positions are left or right. right between the TV and one of the boxes in the corners.
  • At least the 4 corner boxes should also all be at the same height (approximately at head height of the seated listener). This enables the best orientation.
