Help when the fuel gauge is yellow

  • It is annoying if the fuel gauge is yellow and the range is not displayed correctly, but you can also drive without this aid. Fill up with fuel, make a note of the odometer reading and drive two-thirds of the kilometers that you can usually cover on one tank of fuel. Then fill up again. So you can drive with the problem for a long time.
  • If you are not familiar with the consumption of your car or if you do not know how far you can get on a filling, refuel after 300 kilometers. So you can determine the consumption quite well in order to calculate the range.
  • Since the fuel gauge of the BMW E46 is only a computer, you can often reset it to show normal values ​​again. Disconnect the car from the battery for at least 15 minutes. Some drivers report that they had to disconnect the battery overnight before the fuel gauge returned to normal.

Use the secret menu of the BMW E46

  1. Turn the ignition key of the BMW E46 to position I. Press the reset button on the trip meter until you see the display "test1". You will be shown the chassis number. Add up the digits.
  2. Now press the reset button for about two seconds and then repeatedly until you see "test 19".

  5. Press the button again for 2 seconds and then repeatedly until "test 6.0" appears.
  6. Now you have to wait until "" is displayed. Press the reset button again until 6.2 is shown in the display. You will then see the last display value on the fuel gauge and another number. A 1 indicates that the encoders are OK, a 2 indicates an encoder error and a 3 that the ti signal is implausible.
  7. The fuel sensor and the cables can be found under the back seat, you can usually easily replace the signal transmitters.
