Instructions for a folding table

A folding table is an advantage wherever there is little space. Its construction is simple and with these instructions you will be able to make an attractive piece of furniture yourself.

This is what a folding table looks like - variants

For a folding table, you have the choice between the construction with crossed legs and legs tilted outwards. The latter variant is to be dealt with in these building instructions. It enables good stability through stable supports and can be built with simple means.

  • The tabletop is probably the biggest hurdle. Hardly any do-it-yourselfer will have the technical means to make a panel from boards himself. Therefore you should get this part as a finished product. You will find different versions in specialist shops and sometimes also in hardware stores. Depending on your requirements, you can choose a type of wood from Douglas fir to pine.
  • Wood that is not too soft is necessary for the table legs. Pine wood is an inexpensive variety. Those who value authenticity will also make the legs from Douglas fir if the top is made of it. If you want a bookshelf made of light wood to go with it, take birch, for example.
  • Under the table top are two strong bolts to which the table legs are screwed. The bars are of different lengths and thus enable them to be folded up. At the same time there are two strips under the plate. They serve as supports when the legs are unfolded. You determine the inclination of these elements.

The assembly instructions for the piece of furniture

You have to do this to give the folding table a handsome appearance wood In the first step of the assembly instructions, smooth it down meticulously. You should bevel (bevel) all edges. You sand the surfaces. You can achieve the final look, for example, with glazing. In the case of Douglas fir, waxing is also sufficient as an impregnation.

Build a folding table yourself

A folding table is the best table variant, especially in limited space. If that …

  1. Screw and glue the two bars 60 by 60 centimeters under the table top. One has to be 65 millimeters wider than the other. Before doing this, drill a five-millimeter hole in the middle of each end. The bars must be exactly parallel to each other. They should each be in the first quarter of the total length of the plate. Their distance must be around 15 centimeters greater than the length of the leg.
  2. Build the leg racks. The length of the legs depends on the desired height of the table. This in turn depends on the intended use. A dressing table is about 80 centimeters, a computer table 70 centimeters and a coffee table can be even deeper.
  3. Consider the necessary inclination when the legs are unfolded. This reduces the final height again by a few centimeters. The upper ends of the legs are rounded off in a semicircle.
  4. The table legs run parallel to each other. You connect the two pairs of legs in the lower quarter with transverse strips measuring 60 by 30 millimeters. Tap the bar on the narrower pair of them, the other must be screwed on on the outside so that the pairs can be folded into each other.
  5. At the top, two of the bars on the outside provide support when unfolding. You are allowed to let the bars a few millimeters into the legs.
  6. Try out in which position the stop latches ensure the correct inclination and fix them in this way.
  7. Drill a six millimeter hole in the center at the right distance from the curve. This is the only way the legs can turn under the plate.
  8. Make sure that the two pairs of legs interlock exactly when you fold them together. This means that they do not apply much more together than a couple alone.
  9. In this position, screw all four legs together with Vienna screws plus washers.
  10. Cover the screw heads with plastic caps.

If you need space in the future, the folding table can be moved aside quickly and easily. Even so, you can always be sure that, when needed, he will provide the services that you would expect from a table.
