Ball bearings on the rear of the bike are defective

Every bicycle also runs on ball bearings. They are located in the two thickened beads on slim hubs, often not to be seen on the rear wheel. If the bearings on the rear wheel are worn, it is no longer properly guided, it "skids" and makes noises. Then you have to remove the rear wheel to replace the ball bearings.

What you need:

  • Key for the axle nuts

Remove the old ball bearings on the bike

  • The dismantling of the rear wheel is often hindered by the existing circuit. The derailleur system in particular makes it necessary to get your fingers dirty. You need to lift the chain off when you pull the unscrewed wheel out of the frame.
  • The gear unit has a certain amount of tension that you have to relieve so that the chain becomes completely loose, then you can move the gearshift sprocket past the chain. With a hub gear, you can only remove it after disconnecting the chain.
  • Clamp the axle on one side and loosen the nuts, they are locked against the cones on the bearing. Also unscrew the cone and then pull the hub off the axle. Loose balls may fall out of the rear wheel.
  • Then knock the bearing shells of the ball bearings out of the hub, take the parts to the dealer and buy suitable spare parts. Most of the time, the running surfaces for the balls are also damaged, so you should always replace the entire bearing.

Here's how to reassemble the rear wheel

  1. Replace the old cone on the axle with a new one. It has to sit where the old one sat and counter it again. Then push the bearing shells back into the hub and apply a knife point of acid-free grease.
  2. Cleaning the wheel bearings on the bike - this is how it's done

The wheel bearings of the bicycle are generally used by all manufacturers as conical bearings ...

  3. Clamp the axle on the cone, put the new ball bearing on (right side) and put the rear wheel back on the bearing. Then you can assemble the other side in the same way. Adjust the cone there so finely that the axis can be turned without resistance and without hooking. No play should be noticeable.
  4. You may have to readjust after countering because the axle will then jam. The work requires patience and a sure instinct. However, bearings that run easily and correctly also guarantee an easy-to-move bike.
  5. the Assembly of the now complete rear wheel is done in reverse order. Adjust the axle exactly in the middle of the frame before you tighten the axle nuts so that your bike runs exactly in a straight line.
