Fireman Sam is originally a Welsh children's series. It is now broadcast in 155 countries, in 39 different languages. After it was first broadcast on Welsh television in 1885, it took another four years before it was also shown on German TV for the first time in 1889 on ZDF.

Today there are more than 230 episodes, each lasting around ten minutes, in 13 seasons. These are particularly aimed at children between the ages of three and six.

What is Fireman Sam about?

The series is about the fireman Sam and his operations in Pontypandy. The place itself is fictional, but has two real models in the Welsh towns of Pontypridd and Tonypandy.

The individual episodes deal with minor accidents in which Sam always acts as a rescuer. Over the years that Sam has worked, he has been called out to nearly 250 accidents. He was also able to extinguish around 90 fires and save more than 150 people.

Based on these examples, children between the ages of three and six in particular should be shown not only fire prevention but also the correct behavior in dangerous situations. For this reason, the stories are always structured in a way that is easy to understand and the number of people who appear in one episode is kept low.

What characters are there in the children's series?

Given the variety of episodes that Fireman Sam has had, there are also a variety of characters that appear on the show. However, the majority of these are only marginal characters or only appear in a few episodes. Key characters in the series include:

Call the emergency doctor number - this is how you briefly enter the correct information

There are always emergencies where you need to call an ambulance number. Here …

Fireman Sam Jones

He is the main character of the series. As the hero next door, he symbolizes the Pontypandy fire brigade.

When Sam, who is single, is not on the job, he is inventing new things for work or his spare time, such as a tong or a popcorn maker, and growing vegetables in his garden bed at.

In the German version, his standard phrases include “Heiliger Sankt Florian!” and "Damn Sparks". He is spoken here by Clemens Gerhard.

In addition, Sam is the brother of Charlie Jones and therefore uncle to the twins Sarah and James.

Fireman Elvis Cridlington

Elvis is not yet fully trained, is a bit slow on the uptake and acts clumsily in many situations. This always leads to misunderstandings and problems with Sam.

His character is reminiscent of Elvis Presley. Elvis Cridlington wears the same hairstyle and looks very much like him. He also enjoys singing and playing the guitar.

Elvis, who is voiced by Oliver Böttcher in the German episodes, often cooks for his colleagues in the fire station kitchen.

In the computer-animated episodes, he is in love with firefighter Penny.

Chief Fireman Norris Steele

Before his role as commander of the fire station, he was an army officer. For this reason, except for Sam, he only addresses his entire team by their last names.

In the early seasons he was in charge of operations himself, but in the later episodes he is rarely seen in action. Instead, he now mostly sits in his office on the radio to take emergency calls.

In addition, he increasingly directs the exercises intended to convey safety tips to the viewer.

His standard phrases include "Meiner Treu!" and “Every second counts!”. He is spoken in German by Achim Schülke.

Firefighter Penny Morris

A guest from the main town of Newtown, Penny made her first appearance in Season 3. Series. Only from the 5th She is a permanent member of the Pontypandy fire station team.

Since she is trained as a fire brigade diver, she not only drives the small fire engine “Venus” but also the fire brigade boat “Neptun”.

Penny is very athletic and enjoys hiking in her free time. She is also dutiful and, compared to Sam and Elvis, rather reserved.

Penny's German voice actress is Simona Pahl.

Chief Fire Chief Boyce:

Boyce is Chief Fireman Norris Steele's supervisor and works in Newtown.

As a kind of district fire commander, he visits Pontypandy again and again.

Norman Stanley Price:

Seven-year-old Norman, recognizable by his glasses, among other things, is the son of Dilys Price. Due to his thoughtless actions and pranks, he is often the trigger for a fire brigade.

He moves around town on his skateboard and takes care of the lamb Woolly.

The boy is spoken by Lukas Sperber.

Dilys Price

She is Norman's single mother and runs the local grocery store above which she lives with her son.

While she is aware of Norman's bad behavior, she is very confident in him. She is also very jumpy and has a problem with foreign words.

The twins Sarah and James Jones

Fireman Sam's niece and nephew are much better brought up in direct comparison to Norman, but they also trigger one or the other fire brigade operation.

Her parents, who from the 6th relay play a role, run the cod café in Pontypandy.

Sarah is voiced by Kim Mayhew, James by Henry Schneider.
