Most people remember delicious yeast dumplings from the days when grandma used to make them. Served with vanilla sauce, these dumplings are still a must at many fairs and Christmas markets today. Ingredients:

  • 500g flour
  • 1 cube of yeast
  • 1 egg
  • 1 P. salt
  • 50 grams of sugar
  • 1/4 l milk
  • Aside from that:
  • 1 large pot
  • 1 clean tea towel
  • possibly wooden clothespins
  • 1 large glass bowl as a lid

For steaming the Dumplings without a colander you need a saucepan that is about halfway with water is filled. Then a clean tea towel is loosely stretched over the pot. Wooden clothespins are best for attaching the cloth to the edge of the pot. The cloth should not be stretched too deep. It shouldn't come into contact with the water in the pot. A matching glass bowl will later serve as a lid. The steam cannot escape and ensures even steaming without a sieve.

Yeast dumplings - a recipe

  1. Warm the milk in a bowl. Add the yeast and a tablespoon of the sugar and dissolve the yeast in it.
  2. In a mixing bowl, mix the flour with the salt and the remaining sugar.
  3. Make a well in the flour and put the egg in it. The yeast milk is now also added and everything becomes fine and smooth dough kneaded.
  4. Cover the bowl and let the yeast dough rise in a warm place for at least an hour.

Steam dumplings without a sieve - final steps

  1. Knead the yeast dough again briefly and then form evenly sized dumplings out of it.
  2. Bring the water in the prepared pot (as described above) to a boil.
  3. Now carefully place the dumplings in the cloth and put the glass bowl over it.
  4. The yeast dumplings now have to cook in steam for about 10 to 12 minutes. The cooking time depends on the size of the dumplings.
