When do fleas die?
Fleas can make life really difficult for people and animals. When they finally die or at least stop multiplying, so that there is rest again, depends on the one hand on the flea hard and on the other hand on the temperature, because fleas like it warm.
When do the fleas bite
- Fleas live as parasites and feed on the blood of humans and animals. As a rule, they specialize in a certain animal or also in humans, but if the right host cannot be found, they can by all means avoid them. Because of this, cat and dog fleas also bite humans.
- Due to their way of life, these parasites are divided into the groups of nest fleas and fur fleas. Nest fleas look for a suitable shelter, for example in a nest or in the household in a sleeping basket of the pet. They only leave this nest to get fresh blood. Fur fleas, on the other hand, always stay on their host animal.
- Fleas crawl and jump to move. Their hind legs are so strong that, despite their small size, they can cover distances of up to one meter. This is how they get to the mammals and get their food.
- The bites of the fleas, when they suckle blood, are not only annoying due to their extreme itching, but can also transmit diseases. In addition, infections often occur when scratching, because bacteria then get into the open wounds.
- After a flea has really eaten its fill, it can go without food for up to two months without any problems. Most of the time, however, it stings its host animal every day or even several times a day.

Life and death of these parasites
- When the fleas multiply depends mainly on the temperature in their environment. Below 10 ° C they hardly reproduce and below 5 ° C they cease to reproduce completely. However, fleas that have taken up residence in apartments can reproduce throughout the year because of the relatively high temperatures that prevail there.
- To lay their eggs, they use the nests of their host animals or, in apartments, the beds. There it takes between a few days and several weeks for the flea larvae to hatch from these eggs.
- When these larvae pupate into fleas, in turn, depends on the temperature. The larval and pupal stages of fleas can last anywhere from a week to a year.
- Fleas die after a year and a half at the latest. However, this is different for the individual types of flea. Rat fleas, for example, which carried the plague in earlier times, die around five to six weeks after they pupate.
