How to sew a pillow for your toddler

  1. For the simple inner pillow, cut the cotton fabric to 31 x 62 cm. Calculate a 2 cm hem so that the final dimension of the "inner cushion" will later be 29 x 29 cm. So 1 cm smaller than the cover.
  2. Crank all the edges of the fabric well so that the fabric cannot unravel later. Double the fabric to the dimensions 31 x 31 cm and sew the open fabric sides 2 cm away from the edges, except for a sufficiently large opening. Fill in the filling material through this opening and then sew up the remaining seam.
  3. Cut your upholstery fabric into a rectangle measuring 32 cm x 64 cm. With a tight crank seam, you can now hem the entire length of the edge so that the fabric cannot rip open later.
  4. Then take the appliqué that you want to sew onto the pillow and pin it onto one of the right-hand halves of the fabric. In order to be able to remove the pins again, now attach the appliqué with a generous row of seams.
  5. Then sew them securely with a crank seam. After you have pulled out the row thread, fold the fabric once in the middle to the size 32 cm x 32 cm so that the right side is on the inside.
  6. Pin the hem together and line the two halves of the fabric together - 2.5 cm from the two side edges. The row thread shows you exactly that you have to sew 0.5 cm away from it, towards the outer edge, in order to have sewn 2 cm of hem later.
  7. Measure the length of your zipper. If you have a 10 inch zipper, you should sew an inch on each side of the remaining pillow opening the same way you did the sides.
  8. To insert the zipper, turn the pillow over once and only iron in the open, unsewn hem. Now pin the zipper on each of the two envelope edges so that both edges meet in the middle of the zipper.
