Matching bags are of course part of typical hippie outfits. A fabric bag in a batik look, for example, is stylish. You can get simple fabric bags for decorating cheaply in the craft store. You can dye them with normal textile dye.

The batik technique is ideal for decorating simple fabric bags. You can get the authentic hippie look in no time at all. It is important, however, that the bags are not made of synthetic fibers, as these cannot easily be dyed.

Decorate fabric bags with batik - this is how you go about it

  1. If you want a large zigzag ring on each side of the bag, twist the fabric into a sausage on each side and tie it as far down as possible with an elastic band. The tighter you twist the fabric, the more numerous the prongs become.
  2. If it is to be circles that lie one inside the other, you have to tie off the twisted tube of fabric with a rubber band at places one behind the other.
  3. Then put on the disposable gloves, as the paint is difficult to remove from the skin, and mix the textile paint carefully in a bowl of water. To be on the safe side, put them in the bathtub. Nothing can happen there if you make a mess.
  4. For the mixing ratio, pay attention to the instructions for use on the packaging and use a stick for mixing, which does not affect the discoloration. Alternatively, you can use a metal spoon. This does not take on the color.

Batik with textile dye was particularly trendy in the hippie era. …

  6. Then put the cloth bag in the dye bath and leave it there for the prescribed time. You stir the bath every now and then.
  7. Then put on your disposable gloves again and take the bag out of the dye bath. Squeeze the fabric out well, then remove the elastic bands. Rinse the bag carefully under cold running water until only clear water flows out of the fabric. If you want, you can wash them in the washing machine to set the color.

Batik with multiple colors

If you want to decorate the bag with different colored rings, start coloring with the lightest one volume. For example, your goal is to decorate a black bag with yellow and orange rings. You also want an orange handle.

  1. Dip the entire, light-colored bag fabric in the yellow textile dye, let it soak in and then dry the fabric.
  2. Then tie off curls. Yellow circles will later remain where the tape is located. Color the bag including the handle in the orange color and then tie off additional rings.
  3. Finally, dye the fabric in the black bath according to the instructions on the package. Keep the handle out of the bowl. Don't let it droop, however, because black paint will run into it. You can help yourself, for example, with a simple metal clothes hanger that you place over the edge of the bowl as a support for the handle.
  4. If you then loosen all the straps, you will find yellow and orange circles on the black pocket.
