VIDEO: Average water consumption per year
The average water consumption per year depends on several factors. For the most part, water consumption depends on how many people live in the household.
Average water consumption can be estimated
- An average water consumption of 130 liters per day can be estimated per person. This then results in a consumption of around 50,000 liters per year. This means that an average water consumption of 200 m³ can be calculated for a family of four.
- As you can imagine, water consumption increases significantly in very hot and dry summers. On hot days, you can shower several times a day.
- If you use a garden, it will be a lot water needed. Depending on the size of the garden, water consumption can increase significantly each year. Daily watering is unavoidable in extremely dry weather. Otherwise everything would dry up and cause a lot of damage. The damage caused by prolonged drought is higher than the water costs caused by daily watering.
What is most of the water used for each year?
- Most of the water is used for bathing, showering and flushing the toilet. For bathing and showering alone, an average water consumption of around 12 m³ per year is calculated. The same amount is assumed again for flushing the toilet.
- For a washing machine in a single household, you can expect a water consumption of 8 m³ per year.
- The rest of the water is used for the dishwasher, cleaning the apartment and eating and drinking.
Hot water consumption - this is how you calculate the average in your household
