Basically, what central heating is is pretty easy to explain. It consists of a central unit in which the heat is generated. The heat is then transferred to the individual radiators via pipes.

Most houses and entire blocks of flats are heated with central heating. In case you're wondering what that is, it's actually easy to explain. Basically, you only need to know the structure of such a system to understand the principle.

This is how central heating is built

  • Central heating consists of several components. The heart of such a system is the heat source. This consists of a with water filled boiler and a burner that heats the water.
  • The burner is operated with heating oil or gas. These fossil fuels are mixed with air in the boiler's combustion chamber and burned. The resulting heat heats the water in the boiler.
  • The water in the boiler can also be heated electrically or with wood or wood pellets. The type of energy used depends on the homeowner's preferences.
  • A circulation pump conveys the heated water through pipes to the individual radiators. The radiators give off the heat in the respective living rooms. The cooled water is then pumped back into the boiler.

What should be set for such a heater

  • With central heating, the water temperature in the boiler can be regulated. On average, this is 70 degrees Celsius.
  • However, the so-called flow temperature must also be set. This is the temperature at which the water flows through the radiators. The flow temperature should be a little higher during the winter months than in summer. This increases the heating output.
  • With underfloor heating, the flow temperature should not be set higher than 30 degrees Celsius. Otherwise it could get uncomfortably hot on your feet. In addition, excessively high temperatures can damage the heating pipes.

Modern central heating systems are usually equipped with an outside temperature sensor. On the basis of the measured data, an automatic system regulates the required boiler and flow temperature, which increases comfort.
