Measure the elastic band - that's how much you need

Of course, before you can sew the elastic you need to measure it. You should make sure that the elastic band is not too short so that it does not cut in later. On the other hand, it should of course not be too long, otherwise the garment will be much too loose later when worn. How to measure the rubber band correctly:

  1. Place the elastic around the part of the body (e.g. hip or waist) that you want it to sit on later.
  2. Make sure that the elastic is tight, but does not cut into it.
  3. Add about three centimeters to the length determined in this way - you will need this to sew the elastic band together later.

How to sew in a rubber band

Once you have determined the length of the elastic and cut the tape to the correct length, it is time to sew in the elastic. A pretty simple method goes like this:

Sew a hair tie yourself

Sewing a hair tie yourself is very easy. All you need is a piece ...

  1. Spread out the fabric on which you want to sew the elastic band and lay it with the left side up.
  2. Pin the elastic on one side with a pin and let the seam allowance of three centimeters protrude.
  3. Now stretch the elastic so that it reaches the other end of the fabric and pin it there with a needle as well.
  4. Fix the elastic band at intervals of five centimeters with additional pins so that the sew nothing can slip.
  5. Now select a stretchable stitch on your sewing machine - a zigzag stitch is particularly suitable - and sew the elastic band onto the fabric in its full length.
  6. Later, when you have finished sewing the garment, place the protruding end of the elastic over the other side and secure it with a few hand stitches.
