You can usually find information on the scale in maps, navigation systems and technical drawings. The scale shows the relationship between the depicted length or size and these sizes in reality. To get an idea of how this ratio turns out, you have to convert using the rule of three.
Scale 1: 1000 in real numbers
- If you want to convert the scale 1: 1000, you have to do it with the rule of three. You assume that in the illustration, be it a map or a drawing, one unit corresponds to a real unit of 1000.
- 1: 1000 can assume different units. The 1 can represent a meter, centimeter, liter, kilometer or various other sizes.
- The information about which size is meant by the scale 1: 1000 is usually shown on the maps and drawings. The scale can also correspond to a larger or smaller real counter size and then be presented, for example, by the ratio 1: 100, 1: 10000 or 1: 1.

- If you want to convert about 3 centimeters on a scale of 1: 1000, you must assume that size 1 has been increased by a factor of 3, i.e. has been factored by 3. Since converting the scale is an equation, namely 1 = 1000, you now also multiply the real equivalent by 3.
- The result is 1000 x 3 = 3000. Always use this type of calculation when converting any scales in order to get the real equivalent.
