Sew the trousers tighter all around

Newly purchased trousers follow a uniform pattern and do not fit everyone perfectly. To shorten the trousers, open the lower hem and cut off the fabric of the trouser leg. Then you have to sew it around again. Sewing trousers tight is more difficult. Use the following instructions to tailor your trousers:

  1. Thread the sewing thread. Thread the sewing thread of the appropriate color into the sewing machine.
  2. Pants in the right position. Turn the pants inside out so that the side seams are visible.

  3. Pin out side seams. Along the side seams you can use pins to mark how tight the trousers or jeans should be. You can either only stake out at the top of the hip area or along the entire length of the leg.

  4. Try on. Try on the trousers inside out and check whether the marked width is sufficient. The needles are on the outside so they won't prick yourself.

  6. Correct. If too much or too little has been staked out, you can now correct this directly on the body. This is best done with the help of another person.

  7. Stapling.sew With a basting thread in a contrasting color along the pins in large stitches. With these instructions it is recommended that you sew the large basting stitches quickly by hand.

  8. Sew along the basting seam. Now sew with your sewing machine straight along the basting seam and sew the thread well at the end.

  9. Remove the stitching. You can then tear the seams of the basting stitch again.
  10. Remove excess fabric. Use scissors to trim off excess fabric an inch from the seam.

  11. Overcast the open edges. Now you have to neaten the open fabric edges so that nothing can fray during washing. This can be achieved with a stitching or overcasting stitch.
  12. Iron. Now turn your pants right side out and iron over the newly sewn seam. Your tightly sewn trousers are now a perfect fit.

Instructions to change the covenant only

  1. Unplug pants. To sew your pants tighter only at the waistband according to these instructions, tighten them. Use two needles to mark how much fabric you want to remove from the waistband.

  2. Measure the collar. After you have taken off your trousers, measure the amount of fabric to be removed with the measuring tape.
  3. Separate the waistband. Separate the waistband enough to leave enough room to sew. If only a little width is taken out, it is sufficient to cut off the rear side of the collar. Otherwise, loosen the seam and possibly belt loops up to the sides or side pockets.
  4. Fold the waistband. Fold the separated waistband in the middle so that the right side of the fabric is inside.
  5. Sew tighter. Now you can topstitch the collar with a straight seam according to the stakeout. Then cut off the excess fabric. As a precaution, you can leave a little play here in case the trousers have to be opened again.
  6. Try on first. Pin the waistband to the pants. Before you sew the shortened waistband onto your trousers, you should try them on again. Do not start sewing until the tightening is successful.
  7. Sew on the waistband. If everything fits, sew the waistband onto your pants. Then take care of the belt loops, if any.

Sewing a pair of pants yourself is a great way to save money for the tailor. With a little sewing experience and a few simple steps, you can convert your purchased trousers into tailor-made ones.
