What you need:

  • sewing machine
  • Cotton fabric
  • Fabric scissors
  • Tailor's chalk
  • Pins

Sewing clothes and other things doesn't require any special talent, just a little practice. Make it as easy as possible to get started and improve when you have become more confident.

Here's how to learn to use a sewing machine

  • To get started, a beginner sewing course can help you learn the basics of sewing. But even at home, you can make quick progress with your sewing machine and a little patience.
  • Before you start designing your own creations, it is best to sew from a pre-made pattern that you can find on the internet or in sewing magazines.
  • Set up and familiarize yourself with your sewing machine. Insert the thread and bobbin thread - the instruction manual will help - and try a few stitches on a small piece of fabric.
  • Learn with simple pieces and firm fabrics - straight shapes and medium-sized works are best ways to get used to the sewing machine. How about a shopping bag made of sturdy cotton?

A simple guide will help with sewing

  1. For a shopping bag, cut out two rectangular pieces of cotton fabric in the shape you want. If you first draw the rectangles on the fabric with tailor's chalk, it will be easier to cut out.
  2. For the handles of the bag, cut out two pieces about 10 cm wide in the desired length. Enter approx. 4 cm to attach to the bag.
  3. Using a large zigzag stitch, sew along the edges of the four pieces to prevent them from fraying.
  4. Place the two large rectangles inside out and sew them with a straight stitch along the edges of the two sides and the bottom to form a pocket.
  5. Fold the top edge of the bag inwards and sew.
  6. Fold the narrow strips of fabric one by one inside out so that a narrow tube forms. Sew the handle together at the long edge and turn it inside out. A pen will help.
  7. Sew right side out along both edges of the handles.
  8. Attach the finished handles to the opening of the bag from the inside using pins. Make sure that you are sitting parallel and centered and that you have about 4 cm of space to sew them on.
  9. Sew the ends of the handles individually and with a straight stitch. To do this, first sew a small rectangle on the end and additionally reinforce the seam by sewing crosswise within this rectangle.
  10. Finally, cut off any overhanging threads.

Congratulations, your first self-sewn piece is ready! Remember: with practice, you will get better and you will no longer need guidance. Then you can dare to try more complex cuts and start your own creations. Have fun with sew!
