The free photo editing program offers countless functions. A popular feature in photo editing is joining two pictures together. With GIMP you can easily combine two pictures into one picture.

  • Open two photos to be able to put them together in GIMP.

  • Leave the two photos open and open a new file. Click on "File> New ..." or "Ctrl + N".

  • A window opens in which you can select the image size, the color space, the filling of the background color and the format of the new image.

  • It is best to choose a large format. The format should be chosen so that you can also join the two photos on the new picture. In this example, a DIN A3 (300ppi) template is selected. To do this, click on the “Templates” pull-down menu at the top of the window and select an image template.

  • The next step is to copy your two photos onto the blank sheet / new picture. Click in the WindowsTaskbar on the appropriate Gimp-File (1. Photo).

  • After you have the first photo back on the screen, select "Edit> Copy".

  • Now switch back to the new picture of the two pictures want to put them together.

  • Now choose Edit> Paste As> New Layer.

  • Now do the same with the 2nd Image.

  • Your new picture / new file now contains a total of three layers. An empty layer (background layer), a layer with your first image (clipboard) and another with the second image (clipboard 1).

  • Now all you have to do is select the appropriate image or select the layer and place it in the desired position on the background. To move, either select the cross symbol from the tool menu or simply press the "M" key on your keyboard.

  • Then repeat this step with your second picture.

  • When you've put the two pictures together, you can still crop them. Usually the background is still visible.

  • First click on the top level in the layer window and then in the top menu bar on "Layer> Merge Layers Down". Now do the whole thing again until you only see the background layer in the layer window.

  • Now you can use the “cropping tool” (scalpel) on the tool menu to crop the images as you wish. Alternatively, you can press Shift + C to select the tool.
