Design a pattern for a jumpsuit

"Overall" is - as the name suggests - an item of clothing that you can wear "over everything", that is: wear it over everything. The overall is an over suit that consists of only one part. Entire suit, one-piece or station wagon are other names for the overall. It was invented to protect those who slip into it from dirt, fire, water, chemicals and other external influences. Overalls have developed from work clothes into a fashion suit that young people in particular like to wear. If it is skin-tight, it is called a catsuit. The overall made cultural history among the Constructivists and in China.

Originally, the overalls were work clothes.

What you need:

  • (old) overall as a template
  • Seam ripper
  • (Newspaper or packing) paper
  • Pen
  • scissors
  • Zipper that runs from the neck to the crotch (or buttons for a placket)
  • sewing machine
  • Sewing thread
  • possibly. Tape measure

This is how beginners can find an overall pattern

The quickest and easiest way to get off the hook is to tear apart an old jumpsuit that suits you. It is also cheap to look around in a second-hand shop for an inexpensive overall, which you can then use as a template for your pattern.

  1. Then place the individual parts on (newspaper or packing) paper. Pick up a pen and draw around the parts. Cut out the pieces of your jumpsuit pattern. Note that you have to include a seam allowance (i.e. cut out the outline by about one centimeter) if you do not use a seam ripper to open the overall, but simply along the seams cut open. But even if you forget that, it doesn't matter if you haven't chosen a skin-tight or nearly skin-tight overall as a template.
  2. If you want to freely design a pattern by taking the measurements on your body, then take this into account first Basics: When designing a pattern for an overall, the openings must be as small and reduced as possible be. Because this makes it denser, which is an important criterion at least if the overalls are to be worn as work clothes. But also in terms of authenticity - if you "only" want to wear an overalls for fashion reasons - that makes sense.
  3. Don't worry about the sleeves or pant legs tapering to your wrists or ankles when designing a jumpsuit with elasticized hems.
  4. A pattern for a jumpsuit is not terribly complicated, because this over suit cannot slip on the body. So you don't need to think about whether to include belt loops for a belt in your sewing pattern.
  5. Tartan skirt - design your own sewing pattern

A tartan skirt can be made quickly from the right fabric using a simple pattern ...

  6. Overalls are usually closed at the front. A zipper or button placket runs from the neck to the crotch.
  7. By the way, if you don't design long legs for your overall pattern, then you have what is known as a bodysuit.
