If you put all rainforests together, they cover three to four percent of the land area. Nevertheless, more than half of all animal and plant species are at home here. The rainforest then and now - the difference is huge.

The rainforest - the lungs of the earth
- The rainforest is like a belt around the earth. It stretches around the equator and extends north and south to the tropics.
- In these regions the temperatures are between 20 and 28 degrees all year round, as there are no seasons in that sense. There is only the rainy season.
- The amount of precipitation in one year is between 2000 and 4000 mm. For comparison: In Central Europe the measured values are between 400 and 800 mm per year.
- The largest contiguous rainforest is located around the Amazon in South America. But there are (still) large rainforest areas in Africa and Southeast Asia as well.

The rainforest then and now using Madagascar as an example
- Madagascar is an almost 600,000 square meter island in the Indian Ocean. Before humans arrived on the island, it was forested and was home to many exotic animals and plants.
- Today there is hardly any rainforest to speak of in Madagascar. Clearing, burning, wood theft and illegal deforestation are a major contributor to forest loss.
- Attempts to reforest the island with forest have unfortunately so far been unsuccessful. The once stately rainforest has now become a savannah that covers around 90% of the area.
The rainforest then and now is a sad topic. Not only animals are deprived of their habitat, humans deprive themselves of their own foundation. In return, some rich people have a musical instrument made of ebony or a chest of drawers made of rosewood.
