How do you write a scene analysis?
In upper school, dramas are increasingly being read in German lessons. In addition, visits to the theater are often on the program. A resulting exam could be an analysis of individual scenes. But how is a scene analyzed? Above all, a structure is important. The structure of a scene analysis consists of three parts: Introduction, main part, and conclusion.

- Do not start writing straight away; read the scene carefully and make a note of the most important things from the scene. This is how you develop your own structure and keep track of things.
- Pay special attention to what you write in the main part. This is the most telling part.
Write the introduction
- The introduction should briefly capture the key data from the piece: It is important that you name the author, the Names of the play, possibly the epoch / time in which it is set, the place, time and the characters that are important for the scene.

Main part of the scene analysis
- The main part consists of a short presentation of the content and an analysis of key points. Start playing as the first part. Read the text carefully and make sure that you understand it.
- Briefly write down the facts. Concentrate on the essentials. Categorize the drama: In which act / appearance does the scene take place? Present the structure of the scene: What is happening?
- Place the scene in the context of the action. The last thing you should describe is the structure of the dialogue: who is talking to whom?
- This is followed by a detailed structural analysis, in which the speeches of the individual figures are to be examined in particular.
- Take a look at the respective speech proportions of individual characters. Then categorize the parts of the conversation between what is spoken and what is meant (intention).
- Pay attention to the following points and ask yourself the following questions: How are the action and speaking parts distributed? Does a share dominate? Why? How are the parts of the conversation distributed and who speaks how much? Does a character dominate and why? Do the speakers refer to the contributions or do they talk past each other?
Write the end of the scene analysis
- Finally, you analyze the exact meaning of the scene in the overall context of the piece.
- Remember that each scene has a function within the drama. In this way, a conflict or argument between several characters can be triggered or intensified.
- You should include the following aspects in your scene analysis: What function does the scene have for the overall understanding of the drama, for the course of relationships and for individual characters? Include key aspects that are important to you at this point. Finally, briefly evaluate the analyzed scene.
