Protect the koi pond from freezing over
- A winter cover is primarily used to pond to protect against complete freezing. In the case of very shallow ponds, it can even happen that the pond not only freezes over, but also freezes completely.
- With a winter cover, however, you can prevent the surface from completely icing over. This means that there is always an opening in the pond, which means that the gases can be exchanged even when there is frost.
Winter cover and additional protection
- You can make a good winter cover for your koi pond from different materials. On the one hand, so-called pond balls are suitable. These floating balls are constantly in motion and prevent ice from forming on the surface of the pond.
- In addition to this simple option, you can also cut Styrofoam or Styrodur panels and use them as protection. With these two possibilities, however, no gas exchange can take place, and in addition very little or no light comes into the koi pond.
- A quick and easy option is to cover the pond with simple bubble wrap. It also offers good protection and also lets light through. However, the film is not durable for many years, so you will have to replace it with a new one in the next year.

- If you attach a winter cover, make sure to always leave a small hole free for gas exchange with all variants. With the panels you can simply cut a hole in a suitable place with the knife, with the foil you can cut out a piece at the edge.
- If the koi pond is at ground level, bear in mind that the covered area can snow over in winter. From a certain amount of snow it is no longer possible to see where the solid ground is and where the pond begins. Among other things, this can be dangerous if children run over the cover and break in.
